The Surface Imperfection scans contain microscopic levels of detail, allowing for unprecedented up-close detail. Every dust grain and every scratch is clearly resolved, and even the individual ridges of the fingerprints have visible details.

This is a texture set derived from a scan of a real carbon fiber sample, particularly effective for close-up renders where a generated carbon fiber texture pattern won't cut it.

The carbon fiber sample that was scanned is a 12 centimeter 3k 2x2 twill weave prepreg veneer. The ~4k maps were extracted and edited by hand. With the included maps you can achieve various surface finishes, from raw fibers to compression molded with a clear coat.

Note:

  • While this is a scan of real carbon fiber, the resulting maps were not scientifically calibrated or measured. The require some artistic interpretation to achieve a realistic look. The shader setup I used to render the promo images for the pack are is included as a Blender scene file.
  • The texture maps tile, but repetition is sometimes visible across large flat surfaces. This is a consequence of optimizing the carbon fiber for close-up renders.

Carbon Fiber looks so unique because of how the individual fibers catch highlights perpendicular to the strand, something that is mimicked in 3D materials using anisotropic reflections. This pack includes the necessary maps to align the reflection highlights with the carbon fibers.

Kevlar, aluminum and glass weave are all often woven the same way as carbon fibers, and this texture set can also be used to create faithful versions of those materials.

A cleaned up variation of the color map is included, which has the hair and dust specs removed, but still has the imperfect weaves and subtle gaps of a scanned texture. Useful for carbon fiber that needs to look realistic, but not dirty.
